Employment Areas

Cary Veterinary Medical Library

Students would perform the following duties:

  • Check books out of the libraries for patrons
  • Return items to shelves
  • Assist patrons to find materials
  • Answer questions at the desk
  • Answer the phone
  • Open and/or close the Vet Med Branch Library
  • Scan articles for lending
  • Sort books or other materials
  • Shelf reading
Circulation

Under the supervision of the regular library staff members, a student usually performs all/part of the following duties:

Circulation/Reserve/Stacks Duties:

  • Provide direct service to library patrons at the Circulation/Mell desk, which includes the checking in/out materials, answering questions, and directing patrons as needed
  • Assist patrons in using the online catalog, locating materials, and searching for resources
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and shelving duties using the Library of Congress classification system
  • Shelf read, straighten materials, and clear library of browsed library materials
  • Answer the telephones, answer questions, and transfer calls as needed
  • Update records and performs general data entry
  • Assist in the processing and maintenance of course reserves collection
  • Assist patrons in understanding of fines and fees
  • Check and delivers mail to staff
  • Deliver books to offices on campus
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Stacks Maintenance Duties:

  • Process inventory for RBD book collection using the Shelf Lister program on an iPad
  • Search/retrieve missing trace requests
  • Recycle withdrawn material
  • Collect books from the physical processing area for shelving
  • Prepare/replace range lists as needed
  • Forward/backward shifting of books to open up crowded areas on the shelves
  • Place stickers on items
  • Possible visits to offsite storage [OLAF]

Business Desk Duties:

  • Run reports
  • Research financial issues for Patrons
  • Accept and process payments
  • Edit patron financial records in Voyager by processing/posting forgives/payments
  • Educate the public and patrons about library policies to include new community users, borrowing policies, and library fines and fees
  • Assign and inspect study carrels
  • Assist with maintenance of the reserves and new books to include processing lists

Student Lead/Supervisor (Circulation):

After completing at least 1 semester at RBD, exceptional students may be chosen to be a student supervisor.

This position includes all of the normal job duties with the additional responsibilities of being a shift supervisor.

  • Deal with building/patron emergencies
  • Supervise student workers and ensure that daily duties are completed correctly
  • Call in building maintenance issues
  • Open and close the building and ensure that all patrons leave the building before closing
Resource Sharing

Job responsibilities in Resource Sharing include:

  • Going to the stacks to retrieve books and journals
  • Checking books out to schools in Voyager and updating ILL requests in ILLiad
  • Scanning journal articles for Interlibrary Loan and AubieExpress
  • Packaging books up to be mailed out through the Post Office
  • Packaging books up to be shipped out through UPS, Federal Express, and our Lanter system
  • Unpacking books that have been borrowed and books being returned, as well as checking books in in Voyager and completing the ILL record in ILLiad
  • Processing articles found in our electronic databases
  • Some students scan articles on microfilm and microfiche
Library of Architecture, Design, & Construction

Students would perform the following duties:

  • Assist patrons with searching the catalog and Avery Index to find relevant information
  • Troubleshoot issues and assist patrons in using the LADC’s equipment and software technology including large-format printers and scanners, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Autodesk
  • Promptly address patron questions or concerns about library resources and services and refer questions to the librarian or staff as appropriate
  • Responsibly opening and closing the library during assigned shifts according to the LADC’s hours of operation
  • Assist with maintaining the collection by shelf reading and re-shelving materials
  • Check library materials in and out accurately and efficiently
Innovation & Research Commons

Students would perform the following duties:

  • Answer questions at the desk
  • Answer phone
  • Set up wide-format printing for patrons
  • Check technology equipment out to patrons
  • Help keep the area tidy
  • Help patrons use and perform basic troubleshooting of hardware including but not limited to:
  • PC and Mac desktop computers
  • Laserjet printers
  • Wide-format inkjet printers
  • Various types of scanners
  • Digitization equipment
  • VR equipment
  • 3D printers
  • Help patrons use a wide variety of software including but not limited to:
  • Microsoft Office products
  • Adobe Creative Suite products
  • AutoDesk products
  • Audio and video editing software
  • Data visualization/management software
Research and Instruction Services

Students would perform the following duties:

  • Ordering and organizing office supplies
  • Cleaning and tidying instruction labs and other common spaces

Responsibilities of students in Government Documents:

  • Check in new documents
  • Process new documents
  • Shelve documents, microforms, and maps
  • Shelf-read documents, microforms, and maps
  • Type lists of withdrawn documents for offer to other depository libraries
  • Record microform use on spreadsheet
  • Screen gift books for duplication in AUL’s collection
  • Screen gift books for Better World Book acceptance
  • Maintain Adopt-a-Book shelves
  • Pack and ship books to Better World Books
Special Collections and Archives

Student Workers in Special Collections have varied responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Shelving and filing rare books and archival materials
  • Scanning archival materials for inclusion in AU Libraries Digital Collections
  • Using audio equipment and computer programs to digitize historic media collections
  • Serving Special Collections and Archive patrons by retrieving requested materials
  • Entering archival data into spreadsheets and other content management applications
Information Technology

Candidates for student worker positions in the Information Technology Department should have a certain basic set of skills to be able to assist the Information Technology Department efficiently and effectively, as listed below. In addition to those duties listed under job description, you may also be asked to perform other duties as needed or when so requested by the Information Technology Department staff. Our expectation is performance to the best of your ability on all tasks requested by Information Technology Department.

  • Assist Auburn University Libraries staff in resolving computing questions as well as hardware/software problems/repairs/maintenance
  • Assist Information Technology staff in updating computer software, imaging laptops/computers, swapping out computer equipment
  • Refer users to other information resources when necessary to resolve computer usage issues
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area
  • Help set up/transport equipment (up to 50 lbs. lifting required)
  • Any other task as assigned by Information Technology Department
Collections, Discovery & Resource Sharing

Student duties:

  • Process labels for books
  • Help repair books that needed minimum repair (tape, date due slip, etc)
  • Help with unpacking of new books
  • Retrieve books from floor when needed to verify error

Collections, Discovery & Resource Sharing/Serials Section

Responsibilities include:

  • Sort materials
  • Data entry
  • Deliver or retrieve items to certain areas within the building or on campus

Electronic Resources & Serials Service Student Assistant

Performing primarily clerical duties helping to ensure the libraries' resources are discoverable and accessible to AU's students, faculty and staff. Those duties may include:

  • Working in EBSCO's Holdings and Link Management (HLM) knowledge base, activating ebook records in the HLM knowledge base, checking and correcting ejournal holdings and coverage in the HLM knowledge base
  • Working in the Libraries' Voyager cataloging client, relinking item records from serials (parent) records to analytic (child) records; other cataloging client tasks


Pay Structure
Starting hourly rate is $9.00. Pay is based on the job responsibilities and the time of day worked. Pay rates are reviewed annually and increases are not guaranteed.

  • Spring Semester - November
  • Summer Semester - April
